UEFA President Michel Platini says the special atmosphere which will surround UEFA EURO 2008™ in Austria and Switzerland will grow gradually by itself as the tournament approaches.

France experience
Speaking at a briefing in Nyon, Switzerland on Tuesday, Mr Platini reassured people that from his experiences as co-president of the organising committee for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, it was wishful thinking to expect too much excitement so early in proceedings.

Late stage
"We all have a tendency to think that we will all be speaking about the EURO a year before it takes place," Mr Platini explained. "But I can say that in France, the [World Cup] euphoria started at a very late stage! People only started talking about the event about eight days after it had started!

Many ways
"There are many ways to build up the feeling of euphoria," the UEFA President continued. "If you follow the qualifying matches, for example, the atmosphere will rise afterwards, tickets will be sold, the cities will be organising events around the matches, there will be fan festivals like those which were so wonderful [at the 2006 World Cup] in Germany.

Little by little
"The atmosphere will grow little by little. And if I can help to provide a great festival, I will not deprive myself of doing so. It will be a time for Austria and Switzerland to show who they are as countries and what they can do. It is up to the cities, towns, Swiss cantons and Austrian federal states to help stimulate the atmosphere and attract people, to help make the EURO a beautiful festival for everyone."
